I bought a second hand ipad pro. Just in case, I want to get extended coverage for it. Can i still do so?

I just read somewhere that someone bought a second hand device and was able to use his apple protect plan to change it (after a month, the battery was not working well). How can I do so if when i check the device registration, it says it is passed the warranty period? Can i still purchase an apple protect plan?
