I have a MacBook Pro that has finally quit...I need to get access to the files on that machine. I'm assuming they're in my iCloud account...how do I log in to that when the device that set it up is no longer functioning?

As you stated, that is an assumption. They would only be on iCloud if you turned on the needed options on your MacBook Pro while it was working. Those options are not on by default.
To check, you can use any computer internet browser and log into www.icloud.com
and see what is there.
