Safari jumps to top of previous page when using back button

Recently when I’m browsing with safari on my iPad, when I use either the back button or swipe gesture to go back a webpage after clicking a link, the page briefly shows the previous position where the link was, then jumps to the top of the page. This jumping never used to happen and it used to stay where the link was, which was much more useful when browsing. Does anyone know what is causing safari to jump to the top of the page?

Hello Mark,

Make sure your iPhone is up to date, as the updates contain stability fixes that can resolve issues like yours, as well as important security updates to keep your iPhone safe.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

if this continues after updating, let's force close and re-open Safari, and see what happens.
