Apple Watch says it has 4.2gb
My Apple Watch series 3 gps says its capacity is 4.2gb in the about section when should be 8gb. I understand the actual storage won’t be exactly 8 and software accounts for some but half seems like a lot.

Apple Watch
This is a known issue, according to watchOS 7 developer release notes: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/watchos-release-notes/watchos-7-release-notes
"Workaround: Unpair your watch, then pair it again with your phone. Set it up as a new watch rather than restoring from a backup. Use General > Software Update in the Watch app to update to watchOS 7. If you want to restore your watch from its latest backup after the update is complete, repeat these steps while choosing to restore from a backup rather than setting up as new."
Thanks for your reply.I spoke to a guy from Apple yesterday and he basically said the same thing.it’s not really fair I’ve only had my watch for a couple of years and now when there’s a software update it’s useless!
I’m asking who’s in charge at Apple to recall all the watches with this issue and fix and not lying the people and say all the excuses like the apps installed take already some Gigabytes ( Bulshit )Apple they greedy they don’t care they care to make money money bye
There is no solution. I will check when I get my new watch, see if it has the same glitch. Apparently it’s across all watch OS’s and models, just much more noticeable on the 8gb ones because of lack of space.
I’m asking myself but the USA consumer affairs doesn’t do anything about? This is a fraud to people who buy Apple Watch, because Apple they know about and they still sell defective watch , and they see on apple community. Unbelievable
I think the Apple Store may not be selling the 3 right now. I have good news, right now, during heart month, you can get a trade in value for the 3 up to $100 depending on the condition of your watch. You can purchase and SE for about $179-$229 with the trade-in!
I myself have spoken with Apple support a few times regarding this issue and honestly they don’t care!their response was maybe in the next update they will try and make the software smaller, don’t know how that’s going to happen when the other watches have more features!so basically we have all wasted our money and they don’t care at all!
Yes, mine too is saying 2.3gb “available” which means It is not able the perform the last update (needing 2.5gb).
I’ve deleted everything possible, all that is left is what came with the watch. As I understand it, the last updates have been to do with safety, which is now another worry.
I also have the same issue. This has class action written all over it. I will never buy another Apple device due to this issue and the serious lack of support from Apple. If Jobs was still there, this probably wouldn’t be happening.
Having the same issue and spent an hour in chat support only to have them send me a link to send it in that didn't work so starting a chat with another. My watch says it has 4.3 GB of storage and this second chat person is not understanding me either. Cutting the storage in half is a pretty convenient way for me to get sick of my watch and want a new one I guess.
Alright, so we know so far that the "capacity" info discounts the OS... so the "available" info should inform you how much is left from what you've consumed out of these 4.2GB capacity... and here's the intriguing thing: it says I have 3.2GB left, which means around 1GB usage... goddamn it, I dont´t have anything but the native apps... no music, no photos... in the usage menu it says: 9.3MB for mail, 9MB for photos (I have none), 2.6MB for calendar, 2.2MB for contacts and 0,6KB for wallet... nothing else. Where is the 1GB it says I'm using?!
I just factory reset and I'm still using storage somehow lol, didn't choose to set up anything and I've still used a little over a GB. I just can't believe they sell this watch new when you literally have to erase it every single time to install an update, that's insane. I didn't buy it from Apple but I got a warranty when I did, hoping I can return the POS.
Apple also told me they were working to make the software smaller, last week when I tried to do the update it was the last straw,I ended up getting the series 5.I still think they should recall the 3!!!
There is definitely something going on as I have the same problem too on Series 3 non Cellular 4.2GB total capacity . I had Watch OS 6 which showed the same .

If there’s some faulty ram chips being switched off then this needs sorting as recall
Me too — I discovered this when I tried to install latest update and it said I didn’t have enough space (2.9) even tho stripped to bare bones.
