Apple Watch says it has 4.2gb

My Apple Watch series 3 gps says its capacity is 4.2gb in the about section when should be 8gb. I understand the actual storage won’t be exactly 8 and software accounts for some but half seems like a lot.

This is a known issue, according to watchOS 7 developer release notes: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/watchos-release-notes/watchos-7-release-notes

"Workaround: Unpair your watch, then pair it again with your phone. Set it up as a new watch rather than restoring from a backup. Use General > Software Update in the Watch app to update to watchOS 7. If you want to restore your watch from its latest backup after the update is complete, repeat these steps while choosing to restore from a backup rather than setting up as new."

Having the same issue and spent an hour in chat support only to have them send me a link to send it in that didn't work so starting a chat with another. My watch says it has 4.3 GB of storage and this second chat person is not understanding me either. Cutting the storage in half is a pretty convenient way for me to get sick of my watch and want a new one I guess.

Alright, so we know so far that the "capacity" info discounts the OS... so the "available" info should inform you how much is left from what you've consumed out of these 4.2GB capacity... and here's the intriguing thing: it says I have 3.2GB left, which means around 1GB usage... goddamn it, I dont´t have anything but the native apps... no music, no photos... in the usage menu it says: 9.3MB for mail, 9MB for photos (I have none), 2.6MB for calendar, 2.2MB for contacts and 0,6KB for wallet... nothing else. Where is the 1GB it says I'm using?!

I just factory reset and I'm still using storage somehow lol, didn't choose to set up anything and I've still used a little over a GB. I just can't believe they sell this watch new when you literally have to erase it every single time to install an update, that's insane. I didn't buy it from Apple but I got a warranty when I did, hoping I can return the POS.
