Apple Watch says it has 4.2gb
My Apple Watch series 3 gps says its capacity is 4.2gb in the about section when should be 8gb. I understand the actual storage won’t be exactly 8 and software accounts for some but half seems like a lot.

We learned that the watch only shows the gb that are not in use; so you do have the 8 gb. However, it's not enough to handle new updates, unless you strip your watch down to minimal applications. Last month, they were offering rebates on the iwatch 3 for upgrades... not sure what they are offering this month.
Yes, mine too is saying 2.3gb “available” which means It is not able the perform the last update (needing 2.5gb).
I’ve deleted everything possible, all that is left is what came with the watch. As I understand it, the last updates have been to do with safety, which is now another worry.
I had this . After you have removed all applications do a hard rest and that will gain more back . If the update has tried to install and failed it will be in the usage list at about 2GB Ana’s you can remove it and try update again
I also have the same issue. This has class action written all over it. I will never buy another Apple device due to this issue and the serious lack of support from Apple. If Jobs was still there, this probably wouldn’t be happening.
Having the same issue and spent an hour in chat support only to have them send me a link to send it in that didn't work so starting a chat with another. My watch says it has 4.3 GB of storage and this second chat person is not understanding me either. Cutting the storage in half is a pretty convenient way for me to get sick of my watch and want a new one I guess.
Alright, so we know so far that the "capacity" info discounts the OS... so the "available" info should inform you how much is left from what you've consumed out of these 4.2GB capacity... and here's the intriguing thing: it says I have 3.2GB left, which means around 1GB usage... goddamn it, I dont´t have anything but the native apps... no music, no photos... in the usage menu it says: 9.3MB for mail, 9MB for photos (I have none), 2.6MB for calendar, 2.2MB for contacts and 0,6KB for wallet... nothing else. Where is the 1GB it says I'm using?!
I just factory reset and I'm still using storage somehow lol, didn't choose to set up anything and I've still used a little over a GB. I just can't believe they sell this watch new when you literally have to erase it every single time to install an update, that's insane. I didn't buy it from Apple but I got a warranty when I did, hoping I can return the POS.
I totally agree!
but you have to delete the Beta IOS (listed in the usage I think) to make room for future updates. Apple can guide you if you do a search on the subject.
At the Apple Store recently I was told that this Beta version is for professionals only, so how come it got into our watches???
I told them it obviously came with a suggested update otherwise I wouldn’t have had it. And I’m not the only one....
whichever way I look at it, Apple has made some mistake along the lines.
Having exactly the same problem. Had to do factory reset to install latest update. Spoke to Apple support who said they are aware of the issue but couldn’t do anything about it at this stage but looking at resolving it but no timescale given. Helpful NOT.
Apple also told me they were working to make the software smaller, last week when I tried to do the update it was the last straw,I ended up getting the series 5.I still think they should recall the 3!!!
I talked to several levels of Apple Support from chat to phone. I got a helpful support person who confirmed they understood the issue I was describing and that many others had this issue. She said
"The engineers have stated that this is expected behavior and I am completely understanding the concept of the capacity and storage. As of now, the engineers are stating it is expected behavior. Please feel free to leave apple some feedback on this issue at apple.com/feedback. We do really them and take our customers opinions seriously. "
I left some feedback about how confusing this is and asking for a change to be the same as other Apple products. Please do the same.
Apple will give you a trade-in for the 3, in good condition, for $85. I am going to upgrade and count my losses. I will leave feedback. I recommend you take advantage of this trade-in while you can. T-Mobile also has a special on the SE at a discounted price.
If there’s some faulty ram chips being switched off then this needs sorting as recall
There is definitely something going on as I have the same problem too on Series 3 non Cellular 4.2GB total capacity . I had Watch OS 6 which showed the same .

Ok sorry about that .Issue is on Watch OS 6.2.8 which is strange as it used to show 5.8GB now only 4.2GB as capacity despite an unpair and erase and re-partnership
