How to unhang macbook pro running Catalina

My 2018 MacBook Pro 13” is running Catalina, latest update.

I attempted to install 3rd party software for my bicycle power meter. Others have installed it without problems, but after I installed and rebooted, my Mac showed the “loading” graphic, with the loading progress indicated by the line across the screen. When it reached the fully loaded state, it hung.

I restarted and it did the same thing. I left it for hours and no progress.

Next I found out that I could no longer start in “safe mode”.

Instead it starts in “macOS Recovery” mode, giving me 4 choices.

Restore from Time Machine Backup

Reinstall macOS

Get Help Online

Disk Utility

Ideally I’d like to roll back to the configuration just before I installed the 3rd party app.

I see from the instructions on Restore from Time Machine that I can restore individual files. But which files should I restore to remove the 3rd party app without having the reinstall my whole OS?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I would first—

Boot into Recovery (Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities>  Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD (and the "Macintosh HD-Data" volume as well if Catalina) If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.

Recovery: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904

The sequence of repairs should be:

Volume level

Container level

Drive level (verify from DiskUtility>View>Show All Devices, to see the parent drive)

Reboot as normal and see where you stand.
