Erasing an old Mac Book Pro to give to my son?

How do I erase my MacBook pro to give away? I have followed many steps and am at disk utility, where the icon to Erase is not dark, it's gray.

Are you opening Disk Utility from the recovery partition, or from your startup disk? You should be in the recovery partition.
