Screen Shaing as extended display?

I have two iMacs on my desk. They are both Late 2015, Retina 5K, 27 Inch. Both running Catalina v10.15.16.

I'd really like to be able to use one of these iMacs as an extended display / secondary monitor for the other one, extending one desktop across both screens.

I bought a thunderbolt cable but then found out Target Display Mode wasn't supported. I've played around with Screen Sharing but can only seem to mirror one desktop on the other one.

Is there any way to achieve what I'm trying to achieve here?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It has been a long time since I used sharing but I recall mirroring being the only option
