The go to way is resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Even though SMC controls the touchbar, some USB is in play, so this would be NVRAM (or reboot.) notice:

USB Device: Apple T2 Bus

USB Device: Touch Bar Display

USB Device: Apple T2 Controller

Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

I can see the control strip on the touch bar, I can even configure it by dragging the default set into the Touch Bar (System Preferences / Keyboard / Customise Control Strip ), but none of the four buttons do anything, I lost bright and volume controls. I tried resetting SMC, NVRAM, killing touch bar processes in activity control and nothing

The touch bar buttons (left to control strip) seem to work ok
