<<My problem is connecting to the internet through the wall ethernet ports so maybe all the ports in the house aren't working???>>

You are likely correct.

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but next the the Router, that wire that enters the wall upstairs needs to come back out of the wall or ceiling or whatever, and plug into your Router. All you save by stuffing that wire in the wall is you don't walk over it every day. It's still just a cable, and needs to be plugged in at the Router-end.

In some houses, the builder pre-wired the house for Ethernet, but that may mean there are five or six cables in one spot in the basement. At least one needs to be plugged in to your Router.

We have DSL, so we have a router connected to a wall phone jack. The router serves both as a direct connection modem with an ethernet cable to my iMac, but also provides the WiFi to other devices.

So, if you have a Fios box - is that your router? Best if you explain your equipment and exactly what and how it is connected. I have no experience with a Fios box, but it may not allow you to have an ethernet connection to your mac.

We have Verizon Fios, which is fiber optics? We have a router and ONT (Optical Network Terminal, from googling it lol). So far we are able to connect internet through the router both through wifi and wired if connecting directly into the router using the ethernet to thunderbolt adapter.

The ONT has the following:

-small thin wire connected to the outside wires

-ethernet wire connected to router

-phone wire connected to wall phone jack

The router has the following:

-ethernet wire to thunderbolt adapter to laptop

-ethernet wire connected to ONT

My problem is connecting to the internet through the wall ethernet ports so maybe all the ports in the house aren't working??? So not tech savvy! haha. Thanks for helping!
