how do I format a new ext SSD to use for Time Machine backups? I apparently have a problem with both my internal SSD (Samsung 860EVO) and my external SSD (Seagate 500GB) at the same time. Planning to protect/not lose anything, I plan to start by first using Time Machine to back up to a new SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. How do I format the ext SanDisk to match the Apple File System APFS format on my int Samsung 860? Currently running OS Mojave.

Time machine backup is formatted MAC OS Extended, internal SSD formatted APFS. Can I use backup to restore internal drive? I'm using a 1T SSD drive in my MacBook Pro mid 2012 formatted with APFS. My Time Machine external backup is 1.4T partition formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Can I restore my internal drive from this backup? If not, what should I do to have a restorable backup of my SSD drive?
