Sorry, but update of your iPad to iPadOS 13.x is not possible.

If your iPad is currently running, or cannot be updated beyond iOS 10.3.3/4, then have an iPad4.

Update support for iPad4 ended September 2017. The final iOS releases for this model were iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only models) and iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular). iPad4 cannot be updated to any later major version of iOS as it lacks the minimum hardware requirements needed to run more recent versions. The 32-bit platform upon which the iPad4 is based is effectively obsolete.

Many App Developers have also dropped support for older devices and iOS versions preceding iOS11/12/13 - and have withdrawn older versions of their Apps from the Apple App Store. Withdrawal of Apps supporting older models of iPad is making their utility and usefulness significantly more limited. Once compatible versions Apps are withdrawn, you’ll not be able (re)download or (re)install them.

If Apps that you need to use now have higher minimum iOS-version requirements, your only option is to replace your iPad with newer model. Even the basic current iPad7 supports current iPadOS 13.x - and has hardware specifications that will vastly outperform your old iPad4.

I hope this information is helpful - if only in clearly stating the limitations of your iPad4 and your available options.

Thanks, That's what I was worried. This is my second iPad with this problem. Time to switch to a Samsung I guess. "Fool me twice"

LOL. If you think Samsung won't make a tablet obsolete in less time than your iPad, you're dreaming. Apple supports software on their devices FAR LONGER than Samsung does.

You are upset that your 8 year old iPad 4 is no longer supported? To expect any mobile hand held device to be supported longer than 5 or 6 years is simply unrealistic. iPad 4 received updates for a full 5 years. It's now too old and too under powered to be updated to the newer required 64 bit software.

So sure, go buy a Samsung and in less time be even more disappointed. Good luck.

Well, to be objective, iPad4 is now an 8 year-old device - that received active “in-life” update support for nearly 5 years. When compared with Android devices, you will be lucky to see 2 years of manufacturers support from launch. Many Android devices are already effectively obsolete when purchased.

Consider also that the iPad4 and iPad mini1 were the last 32-bit devices from Apple. Everything has now standardised on a 64-bit architecture.

It’s always your choice to make, but, if you look at a “current” model Apple device, you’ll very likely get 4-6 years in-life update support, plus a few years of additional App support beyond that.
