Which app are you trying to update?
If you have installed that app with a different Apple ID from the one you are currently using, then to update the app - you will have to sign in to the App Store with that Apple ID.
Do you remember using a different Apple ID before? If so, sign in with that previous (alternative) one!
See if you can then update the app!

This may be your problem, an updating Apple ID settings problem. Apple is aware of the problem.
Note that some have solved the problem by signing out of iCloud, restarting their devices, and signing back in.
I suggest you use my search link (update apple id settings) in trying to solve your problem. You will see a number of links that are related to it (some deal with iPhone/iPads explicitly, and others are more general). Note that I have not seen a definitive solution for it. But, some related to the search link claim fixes.

Try signing out of the App Store/iTunes, restart, and then sign back in. Check the updates to see if the apps requiring an update are in your Purchases History. If they aren't in your Purchases History, you can delete the app, and download it using your Apple ID if desired. If the apps are in your Purchases History, contact iTunes Support.
