"On My iPhone" not showing up in Files app on iPhone 6 plus

On my iPhone 6 plus which is stuck at iOS 12 the Files app has no "On My iPhone" option. Is this a lost feature due to no being able to run iOS 13?

Hey Pirhotek!

It appears you can't locate the 'On my iPhone' section when saving files to the Files app on your iPhone. We'll do our best to assist with this.

When you go to save content, only the compatible apps or sections will appear. Meaning, does the files app support that content/file you want to save? Use the Files app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch under section, "Save a copy of your file locally" it states: "On iOS 12 or earlier, tap the file and choose Move. Then, under On My [device], choose Numbers, Keynote, or Pages, and tap Copy."

If you open the Files app and go to Browse, do you see the option for "On my iPhone" here?

Let us know and we'll take it from there. Take care!

Hey Pirhotek!

The iPhone 6 Plus would support iOS 12, but not iOS 13, like your iPhone XS Max. Which is probably why you have other options for the Files app and creating new folders on the newer iPhone. Earlier this was shared: Use the Files app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in the fine print under section, "Create New Folders" it states "On iOS 12 or earlier, tap New Folder. If you don't see New Folder or it's gray, then the third-party cloud service doesn't support new folders." Try to open the Files app, select Locations > Edit to add the Canvas app as a location to save files (if supported).

Wishing you the best, cheers!

I discovered this when using Genius Scan which definitely supports On My iPhone as it works on other iPhones I have.

To further test I went into Apple's own Mail app to try to save an attachment to "Files" -> "On My iPhone" and in doing so I could not. There is a an "On My IPhone" section but if you select it then all the actions grey out. Only iCloud and Google Drive work

And if you look at my original post above with a screen shot of the Files App itself on this iPhone 6 Plus you see there is no "On My iPhone" option even listed.

Greetings Pirhotek,

Do you have one of these apps installed on your iPhone Pages, Numbers, Keynote, GarageBand? If not, download them from the App Store or update them, if needed. Create a file within one of those apps and you should now have the option for 'On my iPhone'.

It does require you to have iCloud signed in and iCloud Drive enabled, but it appears that you have that already set up.

Hope this works for you! Have a good day!

I installed Pages and ran it and had it save a doc to Files. It created a "Pages" folder.

I can now access the Pages folder in the Mail app to save attachments too. Same from Genius Scan. But in those apps once you choose "Files" there is no folder creation icon to make a new folder like their are on my iPhone XS Max. On the latter I was able to create a "Scan" folder.

Also in the Files app on the iPhone 6 Plus if you press and hold, only "Info" comes up as an option. On the iPhone XS Max it gives you options to create a New Folder and Scan Document.

Anyway, I can use the Pages folder that now exists for what I need to do to make Genius Scan scans accessible to the Canvas student app for assignment uploads so it is an acceptible workaround. Thanks for the tip.
