two OSs on two drives

i want to install mojave on and external hard drive. The application I want to use on my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 is not fully supported on the current Catalina OS. I've downloaded Majave, formatted a 1 Tetrabit ssd drive but can't get it to launch. Says This Mac OS can't launch Mojave.?

Not sure as i can't remember exact words, but I don't think you can run a Mojave installer while booted into Catalina.

If that is what it is telling you, easiest method might be to create a bootable installer USB from the downloaded Mojave installer.

You can then boot from that and install Mojave on the external drive.

Another option is to use Internet Recovery to install it, but since you've already downloaded the Mojave installer, it would be faster to use that, assuming you have a 12+GB USB stick you can erase.
