Difference between Loved and Starred (in Mini Player)

What is the purpose of the Star in the Mini Player ("play more music like this") versus marking the song as "Loved" as the when you select either the other still remains unselected. I would think they should be one in the same. This is while I'm listening to my personalized station on Apple Music through iTunes.

Although the star rating system should be intuitive, the Loved thing isn't (or at least, I don't think it is). I assume that both features work the same way with Apple Music as they do with music synchronised from an iTunes Library.

When you assign a star rating to a song (with your choice of one to five stars), you're simply marking your songs for your benefit. The star ratings can be used to automatically build up Playlists of your favourite songs. So when you want to play only your favourite songs, you can use the Playlist which will have grouped them altogether.

The Loved feature allows Apple Music to find other music that their algorithm thinks you may like and play it for you.

Since I don't use Apple Music, or the Loved feature, that's about all I can tell you about it. I do however, make extensive use of the star ratings for a lot of the music on my iPod. I wouldn't be without it. The two features don't serve the same purpose.

My personal opinion is that the star rating system allows you to decide what you like. The Loved system allows Apple to decide what you will like.

Hello Jazzeee,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're glad you're here, and we hope you enjoy your Apple Music subscription!

We see from your post that you'd like to know what distinguishes the difference between marking a song as Loved in Apple Music as contrasted to tapping the star in the Music Player. We'll be glad to provide clarification for you so you can enjoy your music with confidence.

  • When you Love (or dislike) a song or album while listening to Apple Music, your future recommendations will reflect your preference.
  • Open this link to learn how to Play recommended music and video in iTunes on PC, then scroll down to "Love (or dislike) a song or album" for more tips.
  • Placing a star next to a song in the Mini Player indicates to others that it is a popular song, and doesn't affect your future suggestions as it does in Apple Music.

Enjoy!
