Text messages and phone calls are being silenced, even tho the "Do not disturb" feature is off.

My iPhone 7 seems to be silencing text messages (and sometimes calls) when the phone is locked. The Do not disturb feature is not on, yet I'm getting the Do not disturb icon next to text messages. Any suggestions as to why this is happening?

iPhone 7, iOS 13

jms1055,

Thank you for replying back!

We understand that the message threads that are being silenced are message threads with your contacts.

To verify, for the message threads that are being silenced are these showing the crescent moon Do Not Disturb icon next to them?

If so, we’d advise checking to see if Hide Alerts is turned on for that message thread. Hide Alerts can silence incoming notifications for just an individual message thread and would be a separate setting from Do Not Disturb. We’d advise checking out the “Mute notifications for a conversation” section in this resource below for useful steps that can be used to turn Hide Alerts On/Off:

Change message notifications on iPhone

With Do Not Disturb, when this setting is turned on and the “Silence” setting is set to Always, all incoming calls and notifications will be silenced even when the device is unlocked. With the “Silence” setting set to “While iPhone is Locked”, incoming calls and notifications are silenced only while the device is locked. If you’re seeking to not silence calls or notifications, you can turn Do Not Disturb off in Settings > Do Not Disturb.

Have a great day!

Hi there jms1055,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

It sounds as though messages and call notifications are silenced when your device is locked, and you’re seeing a crescent moon icon next to message threads. You’re in the right place, we’d be glad to assist in seeking a solution.

Below is a resource that can help:

Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We’d advise checking out the “Turn on Hide alerts” section which can help when seeing a crescent moon next to message threads.

We’d also advise checking to see if the Silence Unknown Callers setting is turned on or if any Call Blocking & Identification apps are installed:

Detect and block spam phone calls

We hope this helps,

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply. The DND setting is off, but I do not get notifications for texts (or some calls). Notification for texts is on, and I did change the notification tone. Perhaps that will make a difference. One message was showing a crescent moon icon, but again, the DND setting is off (I've never used it). Thanks again for the reply.

If one conversation is showing the crescent moon, you may have silenced alerts for that conversation. From the main window in Messages, put your finger on that conversation and pull to the left. Tap "Show Alerts".

The only options under Silence in the DND feature (whether it is on or not) is to either always silence call/notifications or only when the phone is locked. I'm not sure why there is not a third option, to never silence calls or notifications.

There isn't a third option because, if DND is turned off, those options don't matter. They only have an effect if DND is turned on.

Do you by any chance have the mute switch enabled? It's the slider above the volume buttons.

We understand that Do Not Disturb is turned off and notifications for messages are still not being received.

Are all message threads not providing notifications or is it certain message threads?

If it’s all message threads, we’d advise checking to see if notifications for messages is turned on at Settings > Notifications > Messages. This resource below can provide useful steps:

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

When the crescent moon icon is visible next to a message thread, it’s possible for hide alerts to be turned on for that message thread at the same time the Do Not Disturb setting is turned off. While Hide Alerts and Do Not Disturb share the crescent moon icon, these settings can be used and turned On/Off separately. If you are still seeing a crescent moon icon visible next to a message thread, try turning off the Hide Alerts setting and then testing to see if notifications are working okay. The crescent moon icon should disappear next to a message thread when Hide Alerts has been successfully turned off.

We hope this helps,

Cheers!

Thank you for the reply. The text messages that are being silenced are from my contacts. After reading through older posts, this appears to be a feature (an unwanted one for me) of the iPhone. The only options under Silence in the DND feature (whether it is on or not) is to either always silence call/notifications or only when the phone is locked. I'm not sure why there is not a third option, to never silence calls or notifications. I had thought there was an issue with my phone itself, since I was missing texts or calls whenever my phone is locked. thanks again.
