Is your iPad in case - or is the iPad otherwise “naked”? Some cases can interfere with functioning of the physical buttons.
If the iPad is not in a case - and the Sleep/Wake button is not operating reliably - you would be well advised to seek assistance directly from Apple or your retailer whilst you still have benefit of your warranty.
