Unable to update from 9.3.5 on my ipad 2 to iOS 10 and higher. Most of the new apps need iOS 10 and higher. I am unabel to install gmail, youtube, MS teams, etc.

I am unable to see the software update on my iPad which currently has iOS 9.3.5 to iOS 10. Most apps now require iOS10 and higher. Please help. I have followed these steps as i found online:

Register for the iOS 10 public beta

Next we have to register to be beta testers. Luckily, Apple accepts anyone into the program and you can opt out at at any time.

  1. Go to beta.apple.com on the iPhone or iPad you plan to upgrade
  2. Tap Sign up (or Sign in if you’ve registered previously)
  3. Enter your Apple ID and password
  4. Click Sign in
  5. Accept the terms and conditions (or, you know, read and accept them if you’re into that sort of thing)

However, in the software update i still see 9.3.5 iOS and no updates available.

Thank you.

Regards,

Your very old iPad2 can only be updated to iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models) or iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular models).

Apple ended update support for iPad2 in September 2016. iPad2 cannot be updated to iOS 10 or later major versions of iOS, as the internal hardware does not meet the minimum technical requirements for new versions of iOS/iPadOS. This limitation cannot be bypassed - in addition to which, iPad mini is a 32-bit architecture device, whilst all recent versions of iOS/iPadOS are designed for 64-bit hardware platforms.

You may wish to consider that compatible Apps for your iPad are increasingly difficult to find - as third-party developers are increasingly dropping support for older versions of iOS preceding iOS11/12/13. As older versions of Apps are removed from the Apple App Store, you’ll not be able to (re)download or install them - which may severely limit the usefulness and utility of your iPad if you should you ever need reset or restore your iPad. As such, if you want or need to access most current Apps, requiring more recent versions of iOS, you’ll need to consider replacement of your iPad with a newer or current model.

Of current models, even the entry-level iPad7 has specifications and capabilities that will massively outperform you current iPad - and is compatible with the vast majority of current Apps. Other models are more powerful still.

I hope this information provides helpful and succinct clarity as to your available options - and the limitations of your current iPad.

Yes, your iPad is very old in context of both computers and tablet devices.

iPad2 was launched in 2011 - and received mainstream update support for nearly six years thereafter. App support, by developers, continued for a couple of years beyond that. Given that you’ve had nine years service, you’re already doing well.

Many other manufacturers products, including full laptop computers, are obsolete and unsupported in much shorter timescales - two to three years is not uncommon. Some Android devices are obsolete about as you buy them - sometimes never receiving an update at all.

In summary, I wouldn’t feel too aggrieved towards Apple. The fact that your iPad continued to function at all after nine years is testament to the quality of their product. Having a battery that survives for that long is also pretty amazing!

Continue to enjoy your iPad - but you need to understand its limitations.
