MacBook does not open the boot manager

My MacBook does not open the boot manager when I turn it on with the alt key pressed. Instead there is just a white screen with a cursor. Most of the keyboard shortcuts don't work, although the keyboard is ok. A folder with a question mark flashes during normal boot.

Some hard drive failures can prevent a Mac from displaying the boot picker menu. I suspect you have a failing hard drive in your laptop.
