What are my options for an external hard drive?

Alternatively, you can source your own bare 2.5" drive along with an enclosure, preferably FireWire, and then assemble it (extremely easy to do) yourself.

That way you can have the exact drive (brand, capacity, speed, cache size etc) of your choice and perhaps save a little money at the same time.

It's pretty much impossible to say where to get "the best deal" as Eddie says its up to yourself what size you need, does it need to be portable too, how fast does the drive need to be. The best option, which is I did when I looked for my drive, would be to have a look at ebay for a guide on what you should be paying for a good brand. Then search online for a good deal, it may take a while.

Cost will be dictacted by size of drive and how fast it is primarily although as Eddies points out there are other factors to consider.

I got mine of ebay and I'm happy with Lacie as a brand, however other people swear by varying makes.

I have no resverations recommending Lacie to you though.
