can ram be mix matched like 8+4+8+ 4 in 27" iMac

I have a August 2020 27" iMac that came with 8gb or ram

I am adding 2 more sticks of 8gb each=(16gb) for total of 24gb of ram.

Does the order in which the ram sticks are added matter?.

The existing two sticks of 4gb each are in slot 2 and 4.

Not really but the 9 to 5 website indicates that the old RAM (the 2 4gb Dimms) should be in slots 1&2 and the upgraded RAM should be in the 3&4 slots.

The 1&2 slots are the top 2, obviously 3&4 are the bottom slots.

Ram in 2020 iMac should not be installed in mixed pair. The original RAM (2 x 4GB DIMMS) should be in slots 1 & 2 (the top 2 slots) and the upgraded RAM should be in slots 3 & 4. I installed an additional 32GB of OWC (www.macsale.com) RAMl, please pay close attention the slots they are in and not the speed of each. Installing them way you asked would yield slower speeds.

Finally, iMacs are very sensitive to using quality RAM, only buy direct from www.macsales.com or crucial.com, DO NOT buy from resellers like Amazon, Ebay, etc.....
