Why I can’t download an updated from my iPad that was deleted almost everything on it

I am trying to update my iPad , however it’s still saying that it doesn’t have enough space. Almost all Were deleted from my IPad. I had the same issues with my old IPhone. I can’t afford to buy another IPad and I need it for my work So sad 😞
