Rough Screen

Hello. Today I accidentally spilled lemonade on my iPad mini 5. I cleaned it all up and the iPad is fine. But when I grabbed my Apple Pencil, I tried writing and it feels rough. I cleaned the screen, changed the nib for the pencil and then cleaned the screen again and it still feels dirty. It doesn’t feel bumpy or dirty when I feel it, only when I take my Apple Pencil and write. Please help! Thank you! Stay safe.

Screen replacement is, compared to the overall cost of your iPad, very expensive. The typical cost of screen replacement is c.60% of the cost of your iPad “as new”.

Perhaps an easier and much cheaper solution to you problem, if it bothers you, is to fit a good quality tempered glass screen protector. Screen protectors are inexpensive - and are intended to provide sacrificial protection. The cost of changing a screen protector is only a small fraction of the cost of a screen replacement.

No element of your iPad screen can be replaced in isolation.

If, as described, you have been using solvent cleaners (such as window cleaning products that may contain ammonia or other solvents), then it very likely that you have removed parches of the oleophobic coating from the screen - or the underlying anti-reflection surface of the glass. Neither can be replaced.

This oleophobic coating is intended to resist depositions of oils and other contaminants from your fingers. This coating alters the perceived “feeling” of the glass by changing the coefficient of friction. If the coating has been removed in some areas - and not others - you will feel the difference.
