Upgrading iMac to 40GB RAM for 8GB

I have a 2019 iMac model 19,1 with 8gb of ram. I want to add additional ram of 2 cards of 16 GB each for a total of 40 GB or Ram. Will this improve the performance of my iMac since 40 is not in multiples of 8,16,32,64 ?

Yes, you can just add 2 16GB modules into the 2 empty slots.

FWIW it is highly recommended that you order the correct RAM directly from either OWC or Crucial.

Extra memory (with correct specs and Mac compatible memory) always helps in system performance.

Some people did some real life mix and match memory (in different slots, with 4Gb x 2 + 8Gb x 2 = 24Gb) and not significant difference in different arrangement. However, since iMac uses dual channel memory, it is recommended to use "match" pair for the pair-slot.

So, it's OK to have 4Gb x 2 + 16Gb x 2.

Thanks for the quick reply. I add the 2 8gb RAM cards to the empty slots and it worked. The about apple memory shows 2 x 16gb and 2 x 4gb for a total of 40gb RAM. I can't really see any difference in the operation of the iMac 2019 i5 between the 32gb Ram and the 40 RAM. Hopefully there is some difference I don't notice.

What kind of har drive do you have in your iMac?

What kind of work do you do with your iMac?

What do you mean by performance? Time to boot up, open an app, open a file, save a file? Those items are primarily determined by the type of drive you have.

Additional RAM will let you open more files at a time, improve processing of an open file like image or video editing, etc.

I added 16gb x 2 DDR4 memory to a 2019 iMac i5. I first removed the factory installed 4gb x 2 memory cards. Slots 0 and 2 have the 16 x 2 memory. Computer works really well.

Can I add the original 4 gb x 2 memory cards into slots 1 and 3 without a problem ? Would it improve my computer or slow it down ? This would give the computer a total of 40 gb of RAM.
