Opaque box on my screen.

Why does my MacBook Air have an opaque box with a line in the middle that keeps appearing and disappearing on my screen? It seems to appear when I start typing but not always. It will go away for a few seconds then come right back. I cannot click on the box, it is just there. I have attached some pictures.

That's the keyboard backlight indicator: Adjust the brightness of your backlit keyboard

As for its random appearance, obviously it should not be doing that. Try resetting that Mac's NVRAM: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support.
