Hello Craigmont2020, If I am understanding correctly, the newest software update won't install on your iPad. This could be caused by a couple of reasons

  • You iPad is out of date, and no longer supported by Apple
  • You are low on storage, therefore the update will not install until you clear up space
  • Or (if you have an iPad from your work or school) the iPad administrator has declined the newest update

The newest iPadOS update is compatible with the following devises

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch
  • iPad (7th generation)
  • iPad (6th generation)
  • iPad (5th generation)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)
  • iPad mini 4
  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad Air 2

Otherwise, if your iPad is provided by your work or school, try talking to your iPad administrator
