Distnoted terminal message

I booted my Mac in Verbose Mode (command v) to see a live report for when my Mac is booting up. There, I found a “message in the bottle”, evidently left there by an Apple developer:

(com.apple.disnoted.xpc.agent) <Notice>: This service is defined to be constantly running and is inherently inefficient.

Distnoted provides “distributed notification services”. Distnoted is a perfectly benign process, but it can occasionally consume resources and make your Mac slow down.

In fact, there are multiple threads on the forum complaining about Distnoted gobbling up CPU.

I wonder if this is being addressed by Apple, and if any developers have opinions on how to tame this hungry goblin.

“Distributed Notification Server”, is kind of vague, that said, I do know that process is used for the syncing process between iOS devices and Mac, so what would be causing it to freak out, could be anyone’s guess, I’m just curious to see if the process spikes without any external devices/peripherals connected, or with internet turned off, I wasn’t able to recreate it myself. Anyhow, if it’s helps at all, here’s an older post:

Maybe checking out the System.log in Console might shed some light on the situation, or even /Library/Logs.

Either way, hope it works out, nobody like a hungry process gobbling up all their resources!

Hey there! Sounds like a native Apple process. If it’s not behaving as it’s expected to, perhaps you should troubleshoot any software conflicts, or network resources, that are interfering with this process.

Knowing what the process’ function does may help, which is why leroydouglas posted that.

Anyhow, booting to safe mode, disabling the internet, testing in a new user, etc. are all good isolation steps to finding the culprit. Most likely there’s a third party program or service, interfering but only troubleshooting will tell. I bet if you did a clean install, set up as new, it would work just fine, (Although I cant say for sure).

If that we’re NOT the case, and the process was still running a muck, it may be a good idea to call Apple Support to let them know what’s going on, perhaps allowing them to gather some diagnostic logs would help them to find a culprit, or even know that there is an issue in the first place to investigate.
