The lock is between the user’s AppleID used with iCloud, the device’s various hardware IDs and Apple’s servers that authenticate and allow activation of a device. So there is nothing on that device that can disrupt that association without knowing the AppleID and password used with iCloud on that device. You can restore and erase it and that will still not break the activation lock between that hardware, it’s original owners account and Apple’s servers.

Which of course is the whole point of activation lock. To make it impossible to use a device without knowing the AppleID and password.

No. It wouldn't be a very useful anti-theft feature if there were.
