iMovie 10.1.15 crashes and will not load my iMovie library

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, I've used iMovie in my work every week, with absolutely no trouble. But after the update to 10.1.15 a couple days ago, when I open iMovie, it no longer opens my iMovie Library. It opens as if it has never been used before, completely empty, with no projects, media or events.

If I go to the empty Projects page and then click to go back to Media, iMovie crashes. If I open iMovie by clicking on my iMovie Library instead, iMovie crashes.

I can open iMovie, and then select my iMovie Library in the popup menu above the iMovie icon in my dock. But I have to do that every time I open iMovie, and the lack of stability (crashing) after this update worries me a lot. I hope Apple will provide a fix for this update quickly. I really rely on this application working properly.

Try these diagnostic tools to see if you can solve the crashing issue. All of them are very easy to do.

Deleting

Preferences

Try opening iMovie while holding down the

Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that

appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back

to your projects.

Safe

Mode

You could also try booting up in Safe

Mode (see Finder menu for instructions) and, after everything loads,

immediately shut down and reboot in normal mode. Then see if iMovie works

properly.

Resetting

the System Management Controller

Try resetting the System Management

Controller:

Resetting the NVRAM or PRAM

Try resetting the NVRAM or PRAM,

although this issue would be fairly rare:

There have been several glitches reported following the update to iMovie 10.1.15. According to one poster on this forum, Apple support acknowledged the glitches and said they hoped to have them fixed by the middle of next week. If the post is accurate, that would be about September 3, 2020.

If you have a Time Machine backup you possibly could restore your previous iMovie iteration.

Also, with an update iMovie can open in a new blank library. You should be able to close iMovie and go to your Movies folder (Go/Home/Movies) and double click on your old library's icon for IMovie to open in that library.

Good news that a fix is coming soon. iMovie 10.1.15 crashed as soon as I launched it. I tried deleting my most recent project but that initially made no difference. However, a few attempts later, iMovie launched successfully and I was able to use it. But, on some subsequent executions, it again crashed on launch. So, it's an intermittent, but frequent, fault. Very annoying. I look forward to that fix. (I'm running MacOS 10.15.6 (19G2021) on an almost new Mac Mini.)

Thank you, Rich! I’m grateful for your report that there may be an iMovie update around Sept. 3 to correct recent glitches. That’s hopeful. I do have a Time Machine backup, and appreciate your idea of going back to the previous version.

Unfortunately, when I double click on my old iMovie Library icon, iMovie opens but then crashes a couple seconds later. Hopefully that and other glitches will be fixed soon.

Take care!

Kevin
