Upgrade to 10.11 El Capitan and see how well that works for you.

The link for El Capitan is contained in Step No. 4 here:

You can then upgrade further if your Mac hardware supports it, but upgrading to El Capitan is the next required step.

To install OS X El Capitan:

  1. Download that InstallMacOSX.dmg file.
  2. Double-click that file from your Downloads folder. This lets you see what's contained in that disk image. It is a single "package" file (icon looks like a cardboard box. Double-click that package.
  3. This brings up an installation app creator. Run through the steps and when it's done it creates "Install OS X El Capitan.App" inside of your Applications folder.
  4. Open up your Applications folder and the the Install OS X El Capitan app. This is the actual upgrade. It will restart your Mac and you should be on OS X 10.11 when you restart.
