function keys (f1 to f12) stopped working

Hi there

My keyboard function keys have stopped working correctly unless I apply the fn key with them. How do I go back to not relying on the fn key to operate the f keys?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Toggle "Use F1,F2…" in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard.
