My friend can’t join the group chat

As I know normally the way group chat works is you can’t add a non iPhone user to group chats. However for some reason my one friend can’t be added to group chats... whenever we try it acts like his phone isn’t an iPhone and it’s very frustrating when trying to plan things. When you text him the texts are also green but his phone is brand new and the new SE. how do we fix this?
