Yes. I see that as well. Microsoft is indeed a for-profit company.
Is there a free version that can run on High Sierra
Search for "Free Word Processors" in the App Store. Note very likely "you get what you pay for."
or an Apple version that is accessible?
No.
There is a free Word version in the App Store but is will not download, indicating the SSD requires OS 10.14 or higher. I thought there might be earlier versions available. Specifically the Apple Pages app.
The "Free Word Version" that I see (using MacOS Catalina 10.15.6) clearly states Office 365 is required.
Again, the Apple Pages app does, as you note, require OS X 10.14 or greater.
Again, we've been through the "earlier versions available" logic extensively above. They do not exist.
Is there any means to access applications that will operate on OS 10.13.4? Such as Pages, Word, etc.?
What happens if you attempt to access them in the App Store?
I am using MacOS Catalina. When I access Microsoft Word in the App Store, I see the current version of Word can run under High Sierra.

Understood.
Thanks
