My computer (MBA mid 2011) has a Thunderbolt 1. Will a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter work?
I want to use Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) peripherals

Yes. Your Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter/cable will work as you stated. This is because the Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2 use the same Mini DisplayPort design for the connector.
