old Mac and updates

my mac was originally snow leopard (2015) but have been updating and have Catalina 10.15.3 so I am assuming updating to 10.15.6 is ok. My question is, am I right? What happens when the updating goes to something other than Catalina?

Yes, you can update your Mac which is already running macOS Catalina to the latest version available as of today and even in the future ...

The next upgrade for macOS is Big Sur (yet to be released). You can read about it here: macOS Big Sur Preview - Apple and even check if your Mac will be compatible to run Big Sur.

Yes.

It won't, because a macOS upgrade is totally different. macOS will let you know when that upgrade becomes available—sometime in the next few months. In the meantime Keep your Mac up to date - Apple Support.
