CD import fails with error code -54

Have successfully imported CDs to my iTunes library in the past. Now when I load the CD and hit the import button I get this message.

Error occurred while converting the file "<track 1 name here>" An unknown error occurred (-54).

It occurs with every CD i try to import. I can play the tracks from that screen - but can't import.

I checked and my software is all up-to-date. I'm on a MacBook - Catalina 10.15.16 with 250 gig of space still available. I'm using the default on the import: AAC Encoder / iTunes Plus.
