How do I get Mac book pro to see my new phone? It doesn't show in the side panel when it is connected by a cable

I have a brand new Mac book Pro and a brand new iPhone SE. I backed my old iPhone up to the Mac book Pro and connected the new phone to the Mac Book Pro to update from a back up. The Mac Book Pro does not see the new iPhone. My Old iPhone is broken and will not transfer data. What can I do to get the Mac Book Pro to see my new phone?
