Looking at an nVidia card, need advice

I am looking at an nVidia GeForce4 MX440 8x agp card. I did a little digging to see if it would be compatible in my QS 2002 which I believe has 4x AGP. Now, is this card going to work and is the 8X ok with the 4X slot? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PowerPC G4 Dual 1 GHz, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 1.5 GB RAM, SuperDrive, nVidia GeForce 4 MX 32MB

I looked at all the Mac version Radeon cards and boy are they still expensive. looks as though anyone selling a Mac version of any video card is going to soak you for them. I know I'll probably end up doing that or invest in a used G5. The other ting I noticed was that there is a lot of Hong Kong dealers selling "Brand New" cards for Mac at decent prices. Thing is if you have a lemon then what. Right now I'm using my MDD and out of curiosity I installed an nVidia GeForce FX5200 PCI with 256MB RAM, and it works. Check the specs and let me know if everything is up to snuff. Funny thing is that it won't work in my QS 2002. Wonder why? Here are the detals:

GeForce FX 5200:

Chipset Model: GeForce FX 5200
Type: Display
Bus: PCI
Slot: SLOT-2
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0321
Revision ID: 0x00b1
ROM Revision: 2060dr
Displays:
DELL P1110:
Resolution: 1152 x 864 @ 85 Hz
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Supported
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported

Status: No display connected
I would have bought another FX 5200 but it won't do me any good. I'll keep looking on ebay for a Radeon. Thanks for the replies and advice.

Hi-

Here's a 5200 mod for earlier 4x AGP machines:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/FX5200Mods_for_G4/FX5200G4mods.html

Used (and good) Radeon 9800 Pro cards are getting hard to come by.
I pay up to $50 plus shipping to get a card, with 1 in 4 being worthless... add $15 in eBay and PayPal costs for a $100 sale, and there isn't much left, especially if I include shipping in the sale (which I do).
XT's demand even higher prices..... but $180+ is ridiculous......

Geforce 6800 GT cards are a real good performance card for QS machines, but they require a PC to flash them, and a good used card will go for as high as $80.
A good buy there is anything less than $140.

Too many guys are in it for the money, looking for 100% profit (or more). It doesn't help that there were so few retail options, or that they were discontinued relatively early.

Still, with the costs (and risks) associated with used PC cards, it is hard to keep prices down.

And, supply and demand rule.....

I, personally, look for about $20 for my efforts, and call that good enough.

As for the "new" cards, I think these are mostly blatant bootleg copies of original Radeon cards. Quality is a concern, as is warranty.

The "new" X800 XT cards are worthless, and I haven't found the source of the 9800 Pro cards.
The new FireGL X3 cards are also a curiosity, but they flash.
$300+ is outrageous, though........

Japamac, you are the King. I really am amazed with your level of knowledge. I want to thank you for being there when us new MacHeads join the party. So, that being said here is another question for you. I found on ebay a Radeon 9800 Pro with 128 MB of RAM. I put a maximum bid of 65 dollars and there is a 7.50 shipping charge. The card I noticed on your website says that it's a G5 card. Is there anything special that needs to be done to the card or will it work? Looking forward to your reply, as always.
