Camera Quality Decrease

I was editing photos in the Photos app and noticed that the quality of photos was sometimes worse than the other for similar scenes, so I checked the resolution and it appears some photos are the normal 12.2MP (saved as HEIC) but some photos were being taken at only 7MP as a JPG and was wondering why iOS scaled down some of my photos.

Hi fizzys0da,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! Sounds like you are having some issues with the format your camera is taking pictures on your iPhone 11, do we have that right? You may want to take a look at the Settings in Settings > Camera > Format, is it set to High Efficiency or Most Compatible? If you have it set to "Most Compatible", this would be expected behavior. You can change it to High Efficiency to always take the photos in that format.

Hi Fizzys0da,

Thanks for confirming that for us. Are the pictures taken using the built-in Camera app? Are you editing them on your iPhone or on a different device? What iOS is currently installed on your iPhone? Is it up to date?

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Is the JPG the original unedited version of the Photo taken on your iPhone or was it shared or imported to a different device? It's expected behavior for shared photos to convert to a more compatible formats such as JPG.

Take care!
