Follow the steps outlined here: If you see 'invalid SIM' or 'no SIM' on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
You may need to remove the sim, clean it and re-insert it.
Also, sometimes, putting in a new (replacement) sim from your carrier might help!

Do you have a sim card from the carrier the phone is locked to? See if this helps: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201420
thank you! i just removed and "cleaned" the SIM card and it looks like i'm back up and working. appreciate the help. If it acts up again, i now know i may just need a replacement!
