I used an Apple thunderbolt 3 - thunderbolt 2 adapter to connect them. But my ipad show "Cannot use thunderbolt accessory - Thunderbolt accessories are not supported on this iPad".

Assuming you tried that adapter because your Mac has a thunderbolt 2 port, the Mac should also have a standard USB-A port. If so, do you need a USB-C to USB-A cable.
