I want to update to Mojave. will my iPhotos update as iPhoto . i would like to keep them in iPhoto and change them after moving to Mojave to maybe Adobe elements 20. Any added advice would be appreciated. I plan to back up on an external HD.

First off, you're right, the most important thing to do is to make a back up of all your important data before upgrading anything.
iPhoto runs on Mojave, and yes, your iPhoto Library will be untouched by the upgrade - and if anything goes wrong, you have the back up.
Photoshop Element is a very good editor but rather rudimentary organiser. Like iPhoto you can use it as an external editor with Photos, or any other organiser you choose.
Will the app iPhotos run as before the upgrade? Will I be able to make events and albums as before ? I need to do a lot of organizing. I read that everything will go into albums "if" I go over to Photos. I don't want to go to Photos at first.
