IEEE 802.11r

Hi.

I’ve just installed a Devolo Magic 2 Powerline network with wi-fi. I have 4 access points.

The network is a clone of my BT Business router and I have Mesh enabled.

if I also enable the IEEE 802.11r ‘fast transition’ protocol my iPhone X and iPad Pro drop the Wi-fi signal when transiting to another access point.

If I return to the original access point the signal does not return. I have to reboot the Apple device to get full signal again. Disabling and re-enabling Wi-Fi on the Apple device does not get the signal back.

I know the full strength wi-fi signal is present all the time as I leave one Apple device by the original access point and can see this using Speedtest.net.

According to Apple iPhone 6 onwards and iPad OS are IEEE 802.11r compliant.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any ideas as to what is wrong?

Thanks

Malcolm Greenhill

Thank you SravanKrA your post and link helped me to identify the problem.

The problem was that my 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz SSID’s were not identical.

to differentiate them I had suffixed them with 2.4 and 5.0 respectively.

I have now made them identical and my Wi-Fi hands over from AP to AP.

However the handover takes 3-4 seconds and I sometimes see the Wi-fi signal drop out and 3/4G connect for 1/2 seconds before negotiation with the second AP is complete. According to IEEE 802.11r this should take 300mS.

This is only a minor inconvenience compared to the fantastic performance of the Devolo Magic 2 system.
