I'm having the same problem as others: when I edit photos on my MacBook Pro it doesn't save the edits. If I edit photos on my phone and email them to myself then I can import them to photos and save them but I need to be able to edit on my laptop.

Which system version is running on your MacBook Pro?
And how are you editing? When I edit a photo in Photos using the Adjustment panel or the Crop tool, the edits will be saved as a new, edited version. The original file I imported to Photos will remain unmodified, as it should be, because Photos is preserving a lossless workflow, where always can revert to original image file.
What happens when you are editing a photo on your MacBook Pro? Are you using the native adjustments in Photos or an external Editor? Are you getting an error message when editing? Some third-party external editing extensions are no longer working Photos 5 on Catalina.
