adding a device to an existing applecare plan

I have just purchased a new mac book for my daughters university, still in the box and not yet set up. I purchased from apple with an applecare plan. Now about to get her a new Iphone 11. Can I add this phone to existing care plan or is it always a new devices then a new applecare plan???
