I can't seem to update the software to a latest edition?

Hiya! I'm not sure what software edition I have and would like to make sure I'm as up to date as possible. Some apps/services I have paid for don't seem to work on the current version I have, and I was asked (by those 3rd parties) to upgrade to the latest version, Catalina. However, when I got into my appstore, there doesn't seem to be an update for me to do? And when I go into the system preference, it doesn't give me the option of "software updates". Any help I can get would be mighty appreciated, many thanks!

Forgot to mention my device is a MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015). When I look in the "about my Mac" it shows I'm macOS Sierra, version 10.12.6

Software Update didn't exist in Sierra 10.12.6.

Use Get macOS Catalina

Thanks heaps for your help dialabrain, appreciate it. I've done that and have seen the page from the link before. When I go into the system preference, I don't have the option for upgrades though? Unless I'm looking in the wrong place?
