Adding black bars to make video square

I want to add black bars on top and bottom, but not cut into the video, rather adding them on top and bottom while keeping all the video, to make a square video. Any ideas how to do this? Letterbox effect seems to just cut into the video

Final Cut Pro Whenever I am editing a video in final cut pro and i want to crop, transform, or distort, it works the first few times. then when i go back to click on either one of them, the icon is highlighted but there are not controls along the side so i can crop or transform. this has been happening for the longest time and if someone could please help me out, that'd be amazing. i'm sick of having to work around this technical difficulty!!

If you want to make a square video, make a square project. No need to add any black bars.

Just make a new project, choose Square:
