Apple Ibook A1005

I was able to release the hard drive through a side panel...but can not get it out! Any suggestions? (I am going to recycle this computer)

The tray for the optical drive opening? Is not large enough to wrangle

a hard drive out. If that's where you'd hoped to remove HDD, there are

instructions for further take-apart. With tools & care, iBook (G3?) HDD

could be taken out. ~ And someone may be able to re-use the iBook.

powerbookmedic white icebook repair guide

(looks to be from this company, 2004 & not apple)

Appears to be an early iBook white May 2001 or Later G3 12-in model.

re: iBook G3 12" Hard Drive Replacement

For those who actually may seek one of these to repair/use as Mac,

care is needed to not damage wires, connectors; to cause no harm.

Other guides online may include ifixit vintage obsolete ibook portables.

Good luck & happy computing!🌻🐝

Hi,

At least according to the specifications at EveryMac.com, your A1005 would be one of six iBook G3 models from 2002-2003.

Removing a hard drive from an iBook G3 is not without complication, as also indicated by K Shaffer above. If you just want to erase the data before recycling/donating/selling the computer, there are a few other methods without having to remove the drive. However, that would require additional equipment or discs.

The iBook G3 model in question has a FireWire port. With access to another FireWire-enabled Mac, FireWire target disk mode could be used, allowing the iBook G3 to act as an external hard drive that can be wiped using software on the other computer.

If you have a system CD for the iBook G3 (and if the optical drive is still working), it may also be possible to boot from that disc (holding down the C key) and use an appropriate utility to erase and overwrite the hard disk. A fresh operating system could then be installed, if you so wish.

If necessary, there was even an old PowerPC version of a free wiping tool called DBAN (on a Linux-based bootable CD, that could be created from a downloaded ISO file).
