migration assistant with thunderbolt cable

I seem to be missing something about how to migrate my settings from my old macbook to the new. Even when connected with direct C cables, they are only detecting each other via the "peer to peer" wireless at an alarmingly slow rate that will take 9 hours to complete.

I feel like this should be something easy and obvious I'm missing...Target Disk Mode isn't working (the new machine cannot detect the old one, and for Migration they seem to want to talk to each other), and I'm not given an option for how to have them communicate...

Suggestions?

(Yes, of course i can wait till tonight and do it overnight...but if Thunderbolt is an option, and it's faster, seems like I could make it work?)

It appears that you're having a problem transferring your files from your old MacBook to your new MacBook Pro. When trying to target disk mode to move the files, it only connects wirelessly and will take a long time to complete. We're glad to help with this.

Use target disk mode to move files to another computer -- Make sure you've chosen the correct cable and/or adapter to transfer your information from your old Mac to the new one. Since they appear to be connected via Wi-Fi, review the information under "If the target disk doesn't appear on the other Mac" for more information and steps.
