You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.
If possible, backup your files before proceeding.

Macs often don't cool enough during sleep, but sometimes it's a 3rd party kext that doesn't like sleep.
EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.
Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…
Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...
11. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on the Continue button.
2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
3. Click on the Erase button in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
7. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.
Have you blown the dust out of the intakes lately?
What temperatures does this App report? Especially the GPU.
This App can be used to speed up the fans, all my iMacs would be dead without it.
Never ever ever drop fan speeds below the speed that the Mac itself is calling for.

Used a vac is cleaning the vent openings. Here's what's going on - The fan went on this morning as the iMac was in 'sleep' mode. It's running now. Eventually, the fan will stop! It stopped yesterday without taking any extra measures. It stayed off until I went to bed and put the computer to sleep. Nothing. Until this morning while it was still in sleep mode. So, what makes it stop as the computer is being used? I'm not running anything unusual or demanding. And why does it come on while "asleep?"
Asking this before I dive into all these steps. I've tried the basics - shutdown for 15 seconds and then waiting 5 seconds before powering up. Not working. Should I switch outlets? I have a power surge bar - maybe try and a different outlet on the bar? Something that simple? Thanks all again! Dan
